Thursday evenings will never be the same. Over the past several weeks Omar Galal has been giving a series of talks in the RHUL prayer room, detailing the eventful life of Allah’s last Prophet [peace and blessings on him].

Brother Omar does more than tell the dry historical facts. His account is spiced with humour and wisdom, giving us an engaging narrative that shows us how events far removed in time and place have a relevance to our lives today. Highly recommended!

Time: Thursdays 7-8pm

Venue: Prayer Room at Royal Holloway University of London

All welcome. Refreshments served

These talks are now online on http://www.rhulisoc.com/ under the events tab, and available for download.

"We really had no idea Muslims are such friendly, normal, people, and Islam is such a beautiful religion," said one visitor...

Our first “Meet Your Muslim Neighbours” event was held in Egham High Street on Saturday, 12 December 2009. Scores of local people dropped in to the Literary Institute where striking ‘Discover Islam’ posters were on display amongst a variety of Qurans, books and Islamic artefacts. Sandwiches, samoosas and fried chicken washed down with hot tea and coffee awaited hungry Christmas shoppers.

Excited guests not only appreciated the free meal, but enjoyed the rare opportunity to ask questions about Islam, which they admitted is misrepresented in the media and misunderstood by most people. Comments on th feedback forms indicated that the Meet Your Muslim Neighbours event has made a very positive impression on our visitors.

The event was planned and supervised Br Masood Khan who led an experienced ‘Meet Your Muslim Neighbours’ (MYMN) Team from London. Our own team shadowed their every move, so that we can do our events on our own in future, and also train others.

On 5th November 2009 we made a sealed bid for a property in Egham. Our bid was not successful, as someone else made a much higher offer. However, we are exploring other options…

Several properties are coming on the market that might suit our needs.

It appears that we will need about £1 million to secure a building suitable for our various activities, with sufficient parking and accessibility to public transport and major road links.

We would kindly request all our members and supporters to come forward to help us fund this project. If you have pledged your financial support in the past, we would like you please to renew that commitment now, so that we can have a clear idea of what resources we can count on.

Please contact our General Secretary Mushtaq Deshmukh (secretary@iwaws.org) with your pledges. We must be geared up to move quickly as soon as a suitable property becomes available.

InshAllah, when we have our own Islamic Cultural Centre, we will be able to expand the activities and services we provide at present. There’s lots to do, and so many ways that we can improve and enrich our lives and the quality of life for of those around us. Please help us to achieve this worthy goal. We pray that Allah will help you, and us, in serving the Muslims and our neighbours in the wider community.

We are having booklets printed in the next few weeks and would ask volunteers to step forward and take these round to Muslim families and Friends and Colleagues etc. and raise as much money as possible.

We suggest that either you keep the money you have pledged to us in a separate account or pay it into the IWAWS account. We will give you a receipt. If for any reason our property-purchase plans do not materialise and we have to abandon the effort, your money can be refunded to you, or, if you wish, we can donate it to another mosque project of your choice.

Please my dear brothers and sisters; now that we have embarked on this mission, we need your help, as only a few members taking an active role cannot achieve this. We, as a collective can achieve a lot. Just imagine, 100 of us agree to raise £10,000 each or 50 of us agree to raise £20,000 each. This adds up to £ 1 million. So it is achievable by group action and a lot of hard work.

So please do not feel disappointed that our first bid was not successful. ALLAH knows what is best for us and we are confident without any doubt that He has better plans for us. He is just testing all of us to see how we cope and react to the current situation.

MAY ALLAH ACCEPT OUR PRAYERS AND HELP US IN OUR HONOURABLE QUEST. Ameen!

Mushtaq Deshmukh (General Secretary)
